Statement of Significance
A stylistically distinctive house designed about 1895 by the Ballarat architects Gilbert and Clegg for Dr Emil Guthiel. The Gothic and Tudor elements of the ground floor contrast with the upper windows which above sill level are of classical character, and the steep pediments on each facade, supported on consoles and filled with decorative stucco work. These pediments, together with the decoratively haunched chimney back, evoke the English Queen Anne Revival, while the corner turret is suggestive of the work of James McLaren, notwithstanding that its conical roof is steeper than any found in his work and that the Gothic character is more pronounced. The interior has been redecorated but retains a number of elements of similar stylistic diversity. The building is significant more for its unique mixture of styles than for the success with which this is achieved, but it is held together by the deftly handled turret which reduces down to a plain cement corner strip at ground floor level.
