HOUSE - Physical Description 1
Little is, known about the history of this building, although it may possibly be t work of Gilbert and Clegg; architecturally it is unique to Ballarat. The Sturt Street facade is composed of two bay windows with castellated tops, sash windows on the upper floor, and a central sash window surmounted by a steep pediment. Facing Errard Street is an entrance having Tudor elements and a central sash window, again topped by a steep pediment. To the left a chimney corbels out from the wall. Of great importance to the composition is a projecting corner oriel turret which unites the two elevations. Internally, a mixture of Tudor, Jacobean and Greek elements are used. Of note is the use of pressed leather decoration (similar to that at Reedy Creek homestead near Broadford) and panels of relief work executed in a composition material. This building is intact externally and substantially intact internally. It is an unusual building and its combination of different elements make it of importance.

HOUSE - Physical Description 2
Little is known about the history of this building, although architecturally it is unique to Ballarat and apparently elsewhere in Victoria. Title searching established that a J.A.E.Guthiel of Lyons Street, Physician, acquired the property in 1893. This could be a Mistake for E.Guthrie M.D. Sturt Street, for whom Gilbert and Clegg prepared a drawing. Their practice operated 1884 to 1895. 1
This building has a feeling of a French chateau Gothic style with a projecting corner turret with Gothic windows and a steep conical roof, terminating with a sunflower finial. To Sturt Street, two bay windows .with Gothic castellated tops to each bay are echoed in the upper floor with less pretentious pairs of sash windows. Between the top windows is a single sash window with a steep pediment which projects from the roor. On the Errard Street frontage is a Tudoresque entrance over which a low pointed arch with a square label gives added emphasis. Above the doorway is a steep pediment, identical to that on the Sturt Street facade. To the left a chimney back corbels out at first floor level On a group of rather coarse brackets.
Inside the Errard Street entr.ance, divided by another Tudor arch, is a lobby from which a stair rises to. the right. Two rooms open off a further section of hallway. The doors have architraves containing panels of pressed leather decoration, which is also found on the door surrounds at Reedy Creek homestead near Broadford. The two rooms fronting Sturt Street are joined by folding doors and a broad segmental arch with slightly Jacobean pilasters on pedestals at either side. Each room has an elaborate fireplace and overmantel, panels of relief work.in a composition material, and above a mirror, a section of corbelling in the manner of an elongated cyrna recta profile with Arabesque decoration. Above the doors are debased Renaissance tops; not as a full pediment, but a pair of scrolls and a little' palmette motif, the only Greek element.
The stair is essentially simple, but the balustrade at the bottom turns out at a slight angle with a square neliel post and a Jacobean lamp stand on it.
This building is intact externally and substantially intact internally. Its importance lies in the unusual combination of elements; the steep pediments, the bay windows with castellated tops, the Tudoresque elements and the projecting corner oriel turret. This turret is of special importance as it lends an air of refinement to the street corner.
