Statement of Significance
Niel Black, managing partner of "Niel Black and company", arrived in Australia in 1839 and took over the Strathdownie Run, renaming it Glenormiston. He built a stone house of 5 rooms in 1847, and after marrying in 1857 set about rebuilding. The one-storey home encircled by a wide verandah had magnificent gardens - some of which remain today. The Duke of Edinburgh was a guest in 1867. Black became a member of the Legislative Council, a JP and a Shire Councillor. In 1868, the partnership dissolved and Black lost Glenormiston to another member of the partnership. In 1889, one of Black's sons repurchased Glenormiston Homestead and constructed a second storey to the building in 1905.A second Royal visit was made by the Prince of Wales in 1920. In 1949 the house was sold to the government and in 1981 became the Glenormiston Agricultural College. Classified: 09/06/1960
