Statement of Significance
Longerenong homestead on the Yarriambiac Creek near Horsham was established as a pastoral lease in 1848. The Wilson brothers acquired the lease in 1856 and on 30th June 1862, Samuel Wilson laid the foundation stone of his new villa residence. Melbourne architects Crouch and Wilson designed this axially planned, two storey brick residence with balcony verandah as a picturesque and complete gothic villa derived from an American pattern book source.
Longerenong homestead is the finest picturesque gothic style villa in Western Victoria and perhaps the exemplar of this style in the State. The residence is an uncharacteristic, but scholarly, work of the celebrated Melbourne architects Crouch and Wilson. Sir Samuel Wilson, the sixth son of a Northern Ireland farmer, was a distinguished Victorian pioneer whose career as a sucessful politician, pastoralist and philanthropist culminated in his election to the British House of Commons in 1886.
Longerenong homestead is intact and in excellent condition. The interiors and the staircase are of great interest.
