Statement of Significance
Degraves Mill is a large bluestone mill building erected in 1859 for William Degraves, possibly to the designs of architect F.M. White. Three storeyed in height with an attic, the gable roof structure is rectangular in plan and is constructed in five main bays. Walls are in rusticated masonry and string courses, sills and heads characterise the design. The arched doorway is centrally located.
The roof is clad in iron.
Degraves Mill is a landmark on the Calder Highway, is an important element in the landscape of the Campaspe River valley at this point and also signifies the beginning of the township of Kyneton. The old mill is a substantial and early mill and is strongly associated with an important era in the history of Kyneton. The Colonial vernacular structure is also illustrative of a local industry and technology now lost.
The mill is essentially intact and is in good condition.
Classified: 02/01/1957
