Statement of Significance

The Mechanics' Institute and Free Library was designed by a Swiss architect L Boldini, who also designed Braemar House. It was completed in 1893. The symmetrical Italianate two-storey rendered brick facade, which covers a wide street frontage, has a prominent roof pediment and composite capitals to the pilasters. It forms an important part of the streetscape.
