Statement of Significance
Woodend Bridge is a bluestone bridge constructed in 1862 on the outskirts of Woodend. The single arched span is a flat segmental arch and has prominent voussoirs. There is an impost moulding and a string course at pavement level. The bridge is faced in rusticated masonry.
Woodend Bridge is a representative example of the large number of single span bridges erected during this period on the major highways in the state leading to the goldfields. This period is storngly associated with the development of permanent trafficable highways in the State and with a period of major growth in the hinterlands of Victoria. This bridge is fairly typical, but of note for its unusually flat arch, reminiscent of early nineteenth century bridges.
Woodend Bridge was widened in recent times and the masonry face repositioned, but in a reasonably sympathetic manner. The bridge is in good condition.
