Statement of Significance
This is a fine example of the rivers which cut deeply into the western plains. It is all in the hands of private persons, but fortunately the owners of the river are conservation minded. The river is in fair condition, with surprisingly good natural vegetation. However, there are intrusions of noxious weeds, including boxthorn. The river still contains platypus, and the aged hollow red gums provide good habitats for birds and animals.
This is an extremely valuable area in the feature-less basalt western plains and must be preserved in its natural condition.
LOCATION:
Shire of Werribee. Includes the immediate environment of the Classified buildings of 'Strathtulloch' and 'Exford', the Werribee River and the banks to the peneplain from the Melton Reservoir to Cobbledick Ford and the Grey Gums woodland surrounding 'Eynesbury' (also Classified). It includes the Toolern Creek area which joins the Werribee River nearby, which lies between 'Strathtulloch' and 'Exford' garden and the Grey Gum areas.
