Statement of Significance
Contribution to historic garden
Particularly old and venerable
The garden at 'Merang' dates in part to 1859 when the first house was built; but its present form derives from 1865 when the homestead was substantially enlarged. This tree, the middle tree in a row of three, is believed to have been planted in 1859 but when the ha-ha wall was constructed in 1875 the tree roots were partly submerged. A single trunk is not evident and the porosity of the fill material has possibly allowed this tree to survive.
