OGG AND COMPANY (INTERNAL FIXTURES, FITTINGS, JOINERY, CEILING AND ETCHED GLASS WINDOWS ONLY) - History
Contextual History:
History of Place:
The building formerly at 76-78 Collins Street was constructed in about 1861. Over the years it had been altered but the chemist shop interior remained unaltered. The exact date of construction of the fixtures and fittings is unknown but it was the latter part of the last century. C.Ogg leased the shop in 1872 and the business of Ogg & Co. continued 1976 when the last owner of the business, Mr. J.W.L. Skepper, closed the shop because of pending demolition of the building. The building included an outstanding example of a 19th century pharmacy interior and one of the few to remain intact.
The Historic Building Preservation Council on 23 April 1976 issued a permit for the demolition of the building situated at and known as Ogg’s Pharmacy 76-78 Collins Street, Melbourne being numbered 31 on the Register of Historic Buildings. At this time the Historic Buildings Council purchased the fittings and fixtures of the building. This included internal fixtures, fittings, joinery, ceiling and etched glass windows. The chairman of the Council Mr Rodney Davidson said the pharmacy was the first building the council had bought since it was formed in 1974 under the Historic buildings Act. Mr Davidson said he regarded the buying or acquisition of a building as a last resort measure of the council.
Before the fittings and fixtures were removed the unoccupied premises were broken into and some of the features were stolen. In particular the magnificent engraved glass panel recording the appointment of Ogg & Co. as pharmacists to his Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh with the Royal Coat of Arms, was stolen. The glass panel was particularly important both in itself and as a feature of the shop interior. Eighteen drawer knobs and one drawer were also stolen.
The objects once purchased were vested in the Science Museum. The plan was to include the collection as part of an exhibition on medicine and pharmacy in Australia at the new then Scienceworks museum. In the interim the collection was placed in storage at the Science Museum Store at Abbotsford. This included:
* The wooden fixtures and fittings, including storage units and display cases;
* An illuminated sign;
* A ceiling rose;
* The original paper-mache surfaced plaster-ceiling cut into strips.
In September 1999 it was established that the collection had never been put on display and that some of the furniture from the building and the ceiling are now stored at the Moreland Annexe (it was originally stored at the Abbotsford Annexe). The address of the annexe is 10 Cameron Street Coburg.
