Statement of Significance
What is significant?
The Leongatha Interwar Bungalows Group, which comprises:
- Mortlake designed and constructed by F.W. Morris in 1921 as his own residence, at 41 Jeffrey Street.
- The house designed and constructed by J.L. Rowden c.1933, at 110-112 McCartin Street.
- The house designed and constructed by J.L. Rowden in 1936 for U.V. Knight, at 26 Ogilvy Street.
- The house constructed in 1920 for Allan Nelson, at 45-47 Roughead Street.
The houses, all built within the Interwar period, represent two distinct styles. Mortlake and the house at 45-47 Roughead Street are examples of the California Bungalow style, while the houses at 110-112 McCartin Street and 26 Ogilvy Street are 1930s bungalows show the influence of the Mediterranean style.
Non-original alterations and additions are not significant.
How is it significant?
The Leongatha Interwar Bungalows group is of local aesthetic significance to South Gippsland Shire.
Why is it significant?
Mortlake and the house at 45-47 Roughead Street are fine examples of California Bungalows with characteristic form and detailing. Typical of the style they each have dominant gabled tile roofs (which at Mortlake accommodates an attic storey) with deep bracketed eaves and visible rafters, walls of brick and roughcast and rendered chimneys, verandahs supported by roughcast piers with balustrades (tapered at 45 Roughead St with a brick 'hit and miss' balustrade, straight and capped at Mortlake with a low rendered and capped balustrade) and boxed paired windows supported by corbels. (Criterion E)
Of note is:
Of note is:
- The asymmetrical planning of 45-47 Roughead Street with prominent gables to the front and side that respond to the corner position and have timber shingling resting on modillions. The paired gables to the main elevation are very distinctive and the roof appears to be early or original and retains ram's horn finials. Another distinctive feature is the three-sided bay window to the south facing bay.
- The strong simple massing of Mortlake and details such as the tapered rendered chimneys that show the Arts & Crafts influence, the weatherboard hood resting on modillions above the window to the projecting bay, the three-pane attic window with scalloped detail below the sill, and the unusual low gable profile to the side of the verandah.
The houses at 110-112 McCartin Street and 26 Ogilvy Street are examples of 1930s hipped roof bungalows that show the influence of the Mediterranean style. Typical of houses of the period they have rendered walls and hipped tile roofs, wide triple sash windows (that have diamond pattern leadlight at 110-112 McCartin St), double timber entrance doors, and brick chimneys. (Criterion E)
Of note is:
- The simple symmetrical massing of 110-112 McCartin Street where the large central porch with triple-arched opening (with single arched openings to the side) resting on barley twist columns (a nod to the Spanish Mission style) is the dominant feature, and the mixture of smooth and textured render to the walls.
- The return verandah to 26 Ogilvy Street, which takes the form of a loggia, comprising arches carried on short paired Tuscan columns standing on tall, rendered pedestals. Other features of note include the original window box below the window to the projecting bay, the elegant low pitch hipped roof, which has a lower pitch over the verandah, and the original front and side fence with rendered piers and base and decorative steel balustrade and gates, which complements the house and enhances its setting. The significance of all houses in the group is enhanced by their high degree of integrity.
