FARMER'S HOTEL SITE - History
Heritage Inventory History of Site: Originally the site was part of the Carlrushe pastoral lease, and then the St. Agnes run after 1839. After being subdivided this site was bought by Patrick Donovan in 1855. Borough of Malmsbury rate books show that Patrick Donovan operated the "Farmer's Arms Hotel" here from 1863 (or earlier) until at least 1866. The land was sold to James Gleeson who appears in the rate books as "farmer" and it appears that the hotel was no longer operating at this date. A toll bar existed on the highway outside the hotel.
FARMER'S HOTEL SITE - Interpretation of Site
Heritage Inventory Interpretation: Apart from the extant barn, and the ruined stables, there are traces of other possible structures and site features which may be the remains of the hotel.
Heritage Inventory Description
FARMER'S HOTEL SITE - Heritage Inventory Description
The site consists of a well preserved and highly visible stone barn, with a shingle roof preserved under galvanised iron. Attached to the northern end of the barn are the ruins of stables with a cobbled floor. There is a cobbled area along the eastern side of the barn and stables. There is a well to the north of the stables. To the south there is an area which appears to have been quarried. There are several dressed stones in situ visible on the ground surface between the barn and the highway. Several large oak trees line the present highway to the east of the site. There are a few scattered artefacts.
Heritage Inventory Significance: High archaeological significance (10). There is a strong likelihood that in situ archaeological deposits are preserved here. If this was a hotel site its significance is increased by its location on the main road to the central Victorian Goldfields. The site is of high regional significance, which is enhanced by the history of the site as a hotel and by the existence of a toll bar here.
