GALADA TAMBOORE PARKLAND INDUSTRIAL SITE - History
In 1891, William Canninga farmer from Campbellfield purchased a plot of 215 acres 2 roods and 2 perches, including the site, on the western side of the Merri Creek. A one acre block was subdivided from the land in October 1896 and the remainder was sold to Henry Maltzahn in March 1906. Hall (1989) claim that another subdivision occurred in 1910, but when Henry Maltzahn died, in 1951, just over 214 acres were inherited by Alan Maltzahan (Pascoe Vale, farmer) and Louis Maltzahn (Coburg, fitter and turner). The majority of this land (including the site) was purchased by Morgan Estates Pty Ltd in 1962, and between 1963 and 1983 it was divided in to three lots. By 1988 the land was in the possission of MMBW. It is now in the control of Hume City Council who maintain it as part of the Galada Tamboore parkland.
GALADA TAMBOORE PARKLAND INDUSTRIAL SITE - Interpretation of Site
The site comprises a series of ditches visible on the surface as slight depressions and crop marks.
To the south east of the ditch system is an area in which lie a number of bluestones, perhaps originally forming a small paved area.
Sub-surface deposits with the potential to characterise and date the site survive.
GALADA TAMBOORE PARKLAND INDUSTRIAL SITE - Archaeological Significance
A single ditch runs north south whilst three shorter ditches branch from its northern half to the east. There is no indication as to the function of the ditches. The two concrete slabs recorded during the 1989 Merri Creek Parklands survey have been removed, perhaps during the clearance of vegetation to which the area has since been subjected, although several piles of dumped material, including concrete, was observed. The slabs are described as exhibiting circular impressions of the kind left by iron water tanks and being accompanied by a 2 inch water pipe, and a section of zinc or iron pipe was observed discarded nearby during the recent survey.
Approximately 100 metres to the south of the ditch system an exposed section of brick mettled road, approximately 2 metres in width, runs parallel to the tarmac path. This contains Hoffman bricks and may be contemporary with the ditch system, perhaps representing an access road to the facility.
Although the removal of the concrete slabs recorded in 1989 demonstrates that the site has been disturbed in recent years, the ditch system continues to be visible as cropmarks. Artefacts may also be buried within or beneath the roadway to the south.
GALADA TAMBOORE PARKLAND INDUSTRIAL SITE - Historical Significance
The site has historical significance in that it should provide insight into industrial/agricultural activity occuring along the length of the Merri Creek at the beginning of the 20th century.
