    FLETCHERS / GEELONG FREEZING WORKS PIER - History

    Built in 1895. The Geelong Freezing Works was located on the north side of Corio Quay North. THere were plans to ship meat fromt he jetty on the north side of Corio Quay, but a fire burnt the factory down, and there was no production as a result. THere was a jetty and brick building left, but the jetty was never used for shipping, except when the SS Barwon blew onto the jetty one night in a strong wind. It was tied up alongside until the weather abated (Gordon, 2004; Ports and Harbours Branch, 1959:24).
