Statement of Significance
Corio Quay North is significant as a component of the Geelong Harbour landscape. It is significant for its historical association with the timber, fertilizer, meat and car industries. Fords Wharf was associated with car manufacturing, one of the earliest mechanized industries in Geelong and the state. FORDS WHARF / CORIO QUAY NORTH - History
This section of foreshore was recognized in the early 1850s as an important site for a potential harbour (Brownhill, 1990: 285). The first section of the Corio Quay North Wharf (Berth #3) was built sometime prior to 1929 (Loiney, 1981: 134) at the north eastern section of the Quay. The Ford Motor Company had their own pier near the NW corner of the Quay, which appears to have subsequently been incorporated in to subsequent landfill to create Berths (#1 & 2) in 1958. The entire foreshore area behind this Quay was filled in 1954 to provide road and rail access to the quay (Ports and Harbours Branch, 1959: 293). Berths 1 & 2 were added in 1957, a six ton portal crane in 1958, and a crane in 1959 (Brownhill, 1990: 707).Heritage Study and Grading
