Statement of Significance
Statement of Significance as recorded under the Queenscliff Heritage Study 2009
Alikum is of historical significance for its association with early residents who were prominent in the community, including William O'Neill and Henry Reed, who both worked as pilots. It is of historical and architectural significance as a substantially intact example of a mid-nineteenth century house in Queenscliff. It forms part of a cohesive group of early houses in this part of King Street, all of which were constructed by early Queenscliff pilots. Alikum is of additional interest architecturally for its incorporation of an unusual timber cornice element.

Alikum, 24 King Street, Queenscliff - Physical Description 1
Alikum is unusual in that, as well as possessing an M-hip roof, it also is provided with a timber cornice, above the facade, in the form of a parapet which seeks to obscure the roof. Below the cornice there is ashlar-type quoining at the corners which changes to horizontal boarding under the verandah. The verandah is typically concave in profile and is supported on double stop chamfered posts which probably contained lattice work originally. Between the posts, there is timber fretwork fringing which is of a simple, geometric pattern.
Alikum, 24 King Street, Queenscliff - Physical Description 2
An I850s slate-roofed stuccoed brick house with Tudor styled entry porch and bay windows.
Very intact. One of a group.
