BAEL BAEL HOMESTEAD - Heritage Inventory Description
Log homestead of 8 rooms and associated outbuildings, including a log stable, shearing shed, underground tank, stock pens, surface artefacts and scatters and probable sub-surface deposits. Situated on a lunette which extends into the centre of Lake Bael Bael at the south end.
Heritage Inventory Significance: This is a highly significant site, illustrating well the techniques of verncular construction in a pioneering homestead. The building has been well maintained. It is associated with almost the entire period of European settlement in the region and also with nearby Aboriginal sites.
Recorded By: David Rhodes/Joanne Bell Date recorded: 12/07/01
Heritage Inventory Key Components: 1) Log homestead, horizontal pine logs packed with mud. Interior has been modified but many original fixtures remain. 2) Log stable. 3) Post and rail stock pens. 4) Shearing shed. 5) Underground tanks and cess pits. 6) Surface scatters of Nineteenth and Twentieth Century artefacts. 7) Probable dump sites. 8) Garden beds and introduced vegetation eg peppercorn trees and palm trees. Heritage Inventory Site Features: Site not planned - see photos and documentation attached to site card. The site contains a range of artefacts indicative of a long occupation. Structure is built of horizontal adzed log beams with a minimal use of nails - some cut nails were noted in the stables. This suggests a fairly early date for construction, but internal battens and other fixtures are attached with rose-head wire nails (c. late 1870s - 1925). Building has been more recently refurbished and lined with masonite. Artefacts noted included surface scatters of transfer-printed ceramics, including Asiatic pheasant, Nineteenth Century bottle glass (olive and clear), recent underglaze painted ceramics, iron brackets, recent bottle glass (eg coke).
