CAMERON'S SAWMILL - History
THE MILL WAS ESTABLISHED IN 1877 BY ANGUS CAMERON AND JAMES DARROCK. IT CUT MOSTLY RED GUM ALONG WITH SPOTTED GUM AND BOX. THEIR PARTNERSHIP WAS DISSOLVED IN JULY 1883 AND THEREAFTER CAMERON OPERATED THE MILL IN HIS OWN NAME. THE SITE WAS ABANDONDED FOR A SHORT PERIOD IN 1887-1888 AND SHIFTED TO CAMERON'S PROPERTY CLOSE TO NAGAMBIE. IT WAS RETURNED TO REEDY LAKE IN EARLY 1889 AND CLOSED IN SEPTEMBER OF THAT YEAR.CAMERON'S SAWMILL - Interpretation of Site
Pits relate to the operation of vertical breaking-down saw and rip bench. The engine was probably portable given that there are no remains of a boiler setting. A dam nearby provided water for the mill. The mill's log supply was probably jinkered to the site along a raised mound of compacted clay extending north to firmer ground. The area around the mill is a sea of very old red gum stumps, indicating the density and age of the original forest and its impact on the local environment. Chimney mounds nearby and extensive domestic debris betray disturbance by bottle collectors.
