The Bairnsdale RAAF Airfield, on Aerodrome Road, was built on a site comprising of four hundred and eighty eight acres that was compulsorily acquired on 31st August 1939 for £4847. The site was then disposed to Shire free of cost on August 22nd 1960. RAAF establishments were built throughout country Victoria during the Second World War. The characteristic buildings from the war era are the P1 type accommodation blocks and Bellman type hangars (timber framed, corrugated iron clad). At Bairnsdale, the buildings were demolished but unsual concrete hangars remain.
