Geelong Army Drill Hall (1930s) - Veterans Description for Public
The Geelong Army Drill Hall, on Bellarine Street, was built in the 1930s for the Light Anti-Aircraft Artillery. After 1918 no new drill halls were constructed until the mid to late 1930s, when the political situation in both Europe and Asia began to deteriorate rapidly. From 1935 there was an increasing budget for defence. This was reflected in a revival of citizen forces with a commensurate building program. Drill halls built in this period were individually designed and constructed in red brick. All the designs were by the Commonwealth architect George Hallendal.
