Ballarat Memorial Cairn and Cross of Remembrance - Veterans Description for Public
In 1936, a Cross of Remembrance was erected on Learmonth Road, at the end of the Ballarat Avenue of Honour. The Cross is mounted on a rough stone cairn. The inscription reads "To Our Fallen, Erected by Ballarat and District Fathers Association. They buckled their belts about them, they crossed in ships the sea, they fought and found six feet of ground, and died for you and me." A tribute tree was also planted in 1959 in memory of Mrs W. D. Thompson, who initiated plans for the Avenue of Honour in 1917.
The Arch of Victory Precinct and Avenue of Honour, including the Memorial Cairn at the end of the Avenue, is historically significant as a collection of memorial types and structures that represent various forms of memorialisation in Victoria over the twentieth century.
