OLD YARRA RIVER COURSE STONE EMBANKMENTS - History
The former entrance to the Yarra River was defined by a pair of stone embankments in 1879. By 1894, these embankments were obsolete due to the construction of a new Yarra River entrance that was part of the Coode Canal construction project.
OLD YARRA RIVER COURSE STONE EMBANKMENTS - Interpretation of Site
Georeferenced coverages of these embankments from Cox's 1890 plan of Hobsons Bay show that they appear to have been re-used as part of the Newport Power Station water cooling outlet (known locally as the Warmies). Although some sections of the walls have been reconstructed and straightened, the walls appear substantially intact for the greater part.
Heritage Inventory Description
OLD YARRA RIVER COURSE STONE EMBANKMENTS - Heritage Inventory Description
Two stone embankments extend approximately 800 metres either side of the Old Yarra River. These structures are significant as they may be the only original section of the Yarra River unaltered by the Coode Canal construction.
