YARRA RIVER ENTRANCE TRAINING WALL - History
This sheet piling is shown in Cox (1894) which was geo-referenced for this study, but the eastern section appears to have been removed during widening of the river, whose current riverbank now lies 150m to the east of the piling location shown in that map. The southern extremity of the training wall appears to have been removed approx 250m south of the former Yarra River entrance embankments (H7822-0430), but a rough-cut bluestone training wall is still evident underneath a concrete wall built from the probable previous entrance of the Greenwich Ballast Wharves Harbour (H7822-0388) for a length of approx 120m southwards. This wall exhibits evidence of three square pillars that appear to have housed iron lampposts. A number of modern timber dolphin structures are still extant along this section.

The walls delineate the diversion of the original Yarra River Entrance. It is unclear if these are the original stuctures or later additions to them.
