THE BOULEVARD FISHING PLATFORMS - History
Somerville (pers comms) has indicated that there were a number of vernacular fishing platforms along The Boulevard foreshore in Moonee Ponds. These timber platforms were built on small gauge timber piles along the side of the banks, and are rapidly disappearing due to bank subsidence. Some of these platforms were also demolished during the beaching installation of the 1920/30's, but many have been falling apart as the replanted reeds have re-established themselves along the foreshore (Somerville, pers comms).THE BOULEVARD FISHING PLATFORMS - Interpretation of Site
Some of these platforms were also demolished during the beaching installation of the 1920/30's, but many have been falling apart as the replanted reeds have re-established themselves along the foreshore (Somerville, pers comms). The sites vary in integrity, but were formerly made of lightweight timber posts with a timber platform, and were usually vernacular in design (Somerville, pers comms). The site shown to the author was viewed at a distance from a vessel, but appeared to be a collapsed platform with uprights still evident. A section of bluestone support base for the platforms was still evident at at least two sites.
The sites are of recreational social significance to the community, and represent rare surviving examples (in this area) of vernacular fishing platform construction.
