Statement of Significance

Architecturally, a most unusual design which combines the streamlined Modeme style of the 1930-40 era with the skillion/butterfly roof form of the 195Os, its long construction time being presumably due to the immediate post-war embargo on house construction above a certain floor area: of State importance.

Historically, of interest as a builder's own home and possible connection with conservation of building materials after the Second War : of regional interest.

      3 Kalonga Road - Physical Description 1

      Commencing as a streamlined Modeme style single-storey brick villa in the late 194Os, the house gained its present distinctive form when an upper level (consisting of Billiard Room, hall, bathroom and bedroom) was added early in the 1950s. What had been previously a flat roof, became large terrace/deck areas serving the new main upper-level rooms. The original, almost symmetrical, ground level had started as lounge, two bedrooms, kitchen, bathroom and laundry With scope to add two curved rooms to either end, one a sunroom/ dining room and the other the main bedroom. These were added with the upper level.

      Its first form was similar to the late 19305 early 19405 Modeme style houses designed and built by entrepreneurs such as J.A.L. Humphries and c.s. Cameron, using coloured brickwork, corner steel-framed windows, flat roofs and curved forms, Its next form was more spectacular, introducing the butterfly roof form (typical of the mid 19505) and extending the entry porch vertically, as the axis of the elevation. The effect was an unusual but successful combination of the period's most modish forms, overlaid with distinctive patterned brickwork. (see also 6-8 Bulleen Road) The garden and fence relate to the house period.
