WESLEYAN METHODIST CHURCH AND SUNDAY SCHOOL (FORMER) - Physical Description 1
This two storey red brick church school building was constructed in 1870 to the design of Architect J.A.Doane. It is an asymmetrical composition with a square tower rising to a steep pyramidal roof in patterned slating (with steep dormer windows in the faces) but from which the finial has been removed. The Dana Street polychrome brickwork facade is somewhat austere with thin lancet windows (inserted in 1881) with banded heads which replaced the original circular window, and strip" of diaper patterning. The present building is a modification of the original design: the tower was to be positioned east of the gable on the low side, not west; and the facade is less modelled (the bracketted eaves treatment was to continue as a horizontal band across the tower). The original design was possibly more harmonic but the existing building is none the less of great interest. It appears to be a marked departure from other buildings designed by Doane of this period.
This building forms an extremely important streetscape element as part of the
Wesleyan Church complex. The juxtaposition of elaborate patterned brick church at school buildings is quite unique.
