Memorial Window Description & History
Stained Glass Window at Essendon North Christ Church Anglican - Memorial Window Description & History
The low wide shape of the window was unusual in a church location and more often seen in domestic settings. Stained glass artist , William 'Jock' Frater designed many versions of the Good Shepherd, and this delicate painting was evocative of a pastoral scenethat typifiedhis domestic style, despite the inclusion of Christ in the central of the three sections.
John Athelstan Corken (also spelt Corteen) Tytherleigh, a 19 year-old clerk, enlisted on 18 August 1914, one of two sons of Margaret Tytherleigh, widow of "Corleigh", 20 Scott Street, Essendon. He was promoted to Lance Corporal on 9 May 1915 and joined the reinforcements for 6 Battalion at the Dardenelles on 17 June. Only a few weeks later he was killed in action and buried by Chaplain FJ Miles, Shrapnel Valley Cemetery, Gallipoli. The grave marker notes his age as 17 years.
