Memorial Window Description & History
Stained Glass Window at Essendon North Christ Church Anglican - Memorial Window Description & History
The commemorative window was placed in the wall of the shallow north transept. Stained glass artist, William 'Jock' Frater designed an unusual window with all the figures ranged along the lower edges of the lights and Christ ascending above the kneeling figure in the central light. The background was mainly leadlight in horizontal bands. A design for a similar window by Frater, but five lights in width, is held in the Alan Sumner Collection, State Library of Victoria and a window made to a similar design of the Ascension, was later intalled at the Wesley Church, Kyabram (1928). The installation of a window 'emblematic of those who died on the fields of Gallipoli, Egypt and France' was mooted by the Rev. Edward Schwieger as part of additions to the war memorial church that included a tower, to be named after the Prince of Wales, and a carillon. Donor of the window, William Fredereick Salmon paid tribute to his only son and daughter and son-in-law among the many from the church who gave service during the First World War.
30 year-old Percy William Salmon was a farmer at Jeetho when he enlisted on 26 January 1916. His wife, Lily Evelyn was the youngest daughter of DR Dossetor, architect of Christ Church, Essendon North. Within a week of disembarking in England, Salmon was admitted to Fargo Military Hospital with pleurisy and bronchial pneumonia and one month later was discharged to duty at Rollestone; the illness recurred on several occasions. In June 1918 he qualified for a commission at 5 Officer Cadet Battalion and a month later 2nd Lieutenant Salmon proceeded to France as part of reinforcements for 24 Battalion. He was killed in action at Mont St. Quentin on 1 September 1918 and buried by the Rev. JA Jeffery alongside other casualties of 6 Brigade atFrise Civilian Cemetery and later at Assevillers New British Cemetery, France.
Herbert George Howe Colclough enlisted 28 January 1916, aged 28. While with 58 Battalion at Polygon Wood, he was wounded in the right knee and neck but recovered well and returned to his unit only to sustain an inguinal hernia that eventually caused his repatriation to Australia. In January 1919, he travelled home with his wife who had been in England for a large part of the war. Both lived to see their son Sub-Lieutenant Peter Salmon Colclough RANVR awarded the DSC in the Second World War.
