Memorial Window Description & History
Stained Glass Window at Hawthorn St. Columb's Anglican Church - Memorial Window Description & History
A first design, which represented the Agony in the Garden as a central two-light, with St. George and Faith as the subjects of the flanking lights, was prepared by the stained glass department of Brooks, Robinson & Co. The firm submitted a quote for £600 for the window and an opus sectile honour board, a sum that may have convinced the churchwardens to seek another estimate. Melbourne stained glass artist William Montgomery's alternative scheme (without the honour board) was accepted at £315. The design linked events from the Life of Christ with the attributes of the hero: duty, sacrifice, service and victory and was intended to be 'a Memorial of the Soldiers of this Church who died in The Great War'. The window was unveiled by Lieutenant-General Sir Harry GChauvel, KCMG, KCB, on 14 November, the closest Sunday to Armistice Day in 1920 in a service conducted by the vicar, Rev. Deasey, a Chaplain Major during the war.
