Memorial Window Description & History
Stained Glass Window at Camberwell St. John's Anglican Church - Memorial Window Description & History
A memorial window was unveiled by Colonel Fitzpatrick CMG after the morning service on 1 July 1917. It was a tribute to Lieutenant Arthur P Smith, erected by his parents Mr. and Mrs. JAB Smith of 'Carisbrook', Riversdale Road, Camberwell. Unfortunately the window was lost in the fire that razed the church in 1955, however another St. Alban, dedicated to soldiers of the Second World War, was installed much later in the narthex of the new building.
Arthur Percival Smith trained as a mechanical engineer at the Working Men's College (now RMIT University) after his secondary schooling at University High School. He was aged 37 when he enlisted in the legendary 'Professor David's Mining, Tunnelling and Geological Corps', First Australian Tunnelling Corps, on 11 February 1916. On 7 May, 2nd Lieutenant Smith disembarked at Marseilles; he was promoted to Lieutenant in the field on 15 June but, just a few days later on 29 June, he was killed in action and buried at Cite Bonjean Military Cemetery, Armentieres in a ceremony conducted by the Rev. Clement Hoachem.
