Memorial Window Description & History
Stained Glass Window at St Helena St. Katherine's Anglican Church - Memorial Window Description & History
The original church was a private chapel, built by Anthony Beale (1790-1865), on his property at St. Helena near Eltham. Beale had formerly been employedby the East India Company on the island of St. Helena. Beale bequeathed the little chapel that he had dedicated to his wife, Katherine Rose (d.1856), to the Anglican Church and it was subsequently consecrated by Bishop Thornton of Ballarat in 1876.
The war memorial window, designed and made by stained glass artist William Montgomery, was unveiled and dedicated by military Chaplain, Captain Robinson of Mont Park on 6 December 1919 as a tribute to the district's contribution to the Australian Infantry Forces. The account for the window, £29.10.0, was forwarded to the Rev. TH Sapsford on 1 December 1919, and paid in early January 1920. The church was severely damaged in a bushfire in 1957 . An excellent replica window has since replaced the original.
