STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE - GRC - HISTORIC PLACES DOCUMENTATION SHEET NO. 255

The monument of great significance to the people of Geelong and District, and a sacred memorial to the dead of two World Wars (1914-1918) and (1939-1945).

RECOMMENDATIONS: PROTECTIVE MEASURES

The additional war memorial plaques on the brick dwarf walls, together with the stone First World War memobiral at 56 Barwon Heads Road, are historically and socially significant at a LOCAL level. They are associated with different conflicts in the twentieth century and are recognised and valued by the community as memorials to those who fought in those conflicts.

Overall, the First World War, Second World War, Korean, Vietnam and Malayan war memorials at 56 Barwon Heads Road are of LOCAL significance.

      See A. Willingham, Geelong Region Historic Buildings and Objects Study, vol 2. sheet 255, for information on the central Memorial pertaining to the First and Second World Wars.

      The two memorials flanking the First and Second World War Memorial are constructed of brick dwarf walls approximately 1.5 metres and 3 metres long and contain two plaques each. The plaques on the left (north) wall read:

      "To the Memory of those who gave their lives in the Vietnam Campaign", and "To the Memory of those who gave their lives in the Malayan Campaign".

      The plaques on the right (south) wall read:

      "To the Memory fo those who gave their lives int he Korean War", and "To the Memory of those who gave their lives in the 2nd World War 1939-1945".
