Statement of Significance
SIGNIFICANCE: One of the few buildings in Hamilton directly related to the wool industry.
STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE
C J Evans & Sons
81 French Street
The C J Evans & Sons, Wool and Skin Buyers shed is built on land originally sold by the Crown at auction in 1858 to Henry Cox (c1828-79), a London born solicitor who had arrived in Hamilton in 1854 having failed at the diggings. (i) The skin drying sheds are of local historic and architectural interest for their association with the key primary industry of the Hamilton district. Their form follows their function without grace or inessential detail. The building appears to date from about the turn of the century. It is significantly intact and is in good condition. It forms a critical element in the streetscape and relates to the former stables at 50 Thompson Street and can be compared with the Permewan Wright sheds in the Mount Napier Road.
