PORTARLINGTON JETTY - History
Original public jetty in Portarlington was built in 1859. This was apparently so well used that a new jetty had to be built in 1872. Further extensions were made to the jetty in 1877 (Wynd 1988) New shedding for the jetty wasbuilt in 1873.PORTARLINGTON JETTY - Interpretation of Site
Steel piers and timber rails probably related to earlier jetty or parts there of.It is clear from old maps & plans that a substantial area of sand on the shoreline and beach has accreted since the construction of the jetty. This, coupled with the presence of the clearly raised roadway at the approach to the jetty suggest that other remnants of earlier jetty elements may be present beneath the ashphalted roadway. Remnants of former jetty shed may also be present on west side of roadway.
