Statement of Significance
Upton's Shed is located on a flat area of land adjacent to Torah Road, some 2.6 kilometres north of the intersection of the Casterton-Edenhope Road and Torah Road at Wando Bridge. The shed previously had a large granary located some 25m south of it, which was removed several years ago. The existing shed is a long low structure, mainly symmetrical other than a later skillion addition to the northern end. The main roof is a simple hip of corrugated iron, with the skillion a flat corrugated iron addition. The uprights are stringy bark timbers in the round, with a fork at the top, where the rafters and supports for the roof sit. No original nails have been used, but later nails have been used to affix the corrugated iron roof and to prop the structure. Some of the rafters are rotting on the sawn ends, which extend beyond the corrugated iron on all sides. Overall, the shed is in good condition. The roof timbers in particular are in excellent condition.
How is it significanct?
Uptons Shed is of historical and architectural significance to the Glenelg Shire.
Why is it significant?
Upton's Shed is of historical significance as a rare surviving example of a type of farm building, once common but now almost never seen. The associations with the Upton family, who were small farmers who took up land in the great Wando Vale Closer Settlement Scheme of 1901, provides further historical significance. Of architectural significance is the use of local materials and primitive construction techniques, adapted to suit the requirements and budget of the farmers who built the sheds.

UPTON'S SHED - Physical Description 1
Upton's Shed is located on a flat area of land adjacent to Torah Road, some 2.6 kilometres north of the intersection of the Casterton-Edenhope Road and Torah Road at Wando Bridge. The shed previously had a large granary located some 25m south of it, which was removed several years ago.
The existing shed is a long low structure, mainly symmetrical other than a later skillion addition to the northern end. The main roof is a simple hip of corrugated iron, with the skillion a flat corrugated iron addition. No original nails have been used, but later nails have been used to affix the corrugated iron roof and to prop the structure. Some of the rafters are rotting on the sawn ends which extend beyond the corrugated iron on all sides.
The shed has walls which enclose it on three sides, leaving the east side open. There may previously have been some covering or doors, which have since been removed. The walls are upright split slabs of timber of varying size, held in place with twisted wire and stringy bark poles on the lower and upper ends of the slabs. The skillion section appears to have been a later addition, which has not been as well constructed. Overall, the shed is in good condition. The roof timbers in particular are in excellent condition.UPTON'S SHED - Physical Conditions
