REVISED STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE, CONTEXT, 2010

What is significant?
The 1889 teacher's residence including the 1922 rear addition and the site to a radius of 10 metres from each of the above.

How is it significant?
The teacher's residence is historically, socially and aesthetically significant to the Shire of Nillumbik.

Why is it significant?
The residence is historically significant as the only surviving 19th century dwelling in the centre of Panton Hill; the former Shire of Eltham had only two other similar weatherboard school buildings from the era (at Kangaroo Ground and St Andrews) - this building is unusual in that the other two examples have the school and residence in a single building (Criterion B). The residence is historically and socially significant because it is connected to the State school (HO 97) which has served the local community since 1889 (Criterion G). The residence is historically and aesthetically significant as one of six key early buildings that form the core of Panton Hill (the former school, the Anglican church and church hall, the post office and the store being the others) (Criteria A & E). The residence is aesthetically significant as a standard education department/public works department design (Criterion E).
