Statement of Significance

The Glenferrie Sports Ground Grandstand is of State significance. Designed by Stuart P Calder in association with Marsh and Michaelson in 1938, it is a perfect vehicle for the inherently sculptural qualities of the Moderne style because it is visible from all sides, prominent in the streetscape and boldly takes advantage of its curved plan. It is the only known grandstand to adopt the Moderne style, incorporating characteristic facets such as round windows, glass bricks, daring cantilevers, rounded forms and a fully three-dimensional composition. The grandstand, and Calder's other notable design, McPherson's Building Bourke Street, are amongst the best of the Moderne style in the State.
