Statement of Significance
Built in 1902 for Mrs Matilda Reid, Marlborough House is one of a number of distinctive buildings in the area constructed by W J Croad. Significant for its use of local rubble limestone with red brick dressings around door and window openings and at the corners, the simplicity of the building' s symmetrical composition is considerably enhanced by the vertical lines of the two storey inset timber verandah decorated with pocket balustrades and a square lattice frieze at ground floor level. Marlborough House was a leading guest house in one of Victoria's most popular and important tourist and resort centres.
