SEXTON'S COTTAGE SITE, SOUTH PORTLAND CEMETERY - History
First burial took place in 1844. Cemetery trustees were established in 1861. Cemetery established in 1863. Sexton's building was built in 1887. Gates erected in 1894. Between 1867-1982 there have been 12 caretakers employed by the cemetery trust.

Buildings moved from original site, both are still intact. Known as the Sexton's Cottage.
SEXTON'S COTTAGE SITE, SOUTH PORTLAND CEMETERY - Archaeological Significance
The area has potential for archaeological deposits, however, original site of buildings is not precisely known but it is reported to be near the cemetery gates.

Cemetery in use. Two small timber buildings. Site inspected Jan 1994 - sextons cottage moved to new site within cemetery. Trees removed.
