KNOTT'S NO.1 MILL - History
Heritage Inventory History of Site: Sawmill originally established in 1908 by James Reigel and Condon Bros. Sold in 1909 to G.W. Knott, a Melbourne timber-broker and merchant. The mill thereafter maintained the large daily average volume of 24 cubic metres/10,000 superfeet, arguably the largest tally in the Otways region. In 1920 the mill was brought by the War Services Homes Commission, which sold it several months later to Reynolds Driver. The mill operated until it burnt down in 1921. It was rebuilt in 1923 by J & W Condon and Dick Perkins and continued in operation until 1932.
KNOTT'S NO.1 MILL - Interpretation of Site
Heritage Inventory Interpretation: the mill was established in Young Creek to extract timber south of Ferguson. Log and outlet tramways to the west and north-east of the mill have since been converted into roads. Several steeply-sided sawdust heaps provide evidence of the scale of operations at the mill site. A constructed walkway passes through the mill in its rainforest setting, and continues down to Triplet Falls.
