Statement of Significance
Ward's Mill on the Calder Highway north of Kyneton, is a particularly large and substantial bluestone mill erected in 1856-57 for William De Graves, to the designs of architect F M White. The five bay, main building is three storied and has an attic storey.
There is a rear wing extending perpendicular to the front block, with lean-to roofed lower sections on bluestone arcades, to either side. Roofs are gabled.
Ward's Mill is important most especially for its unusual planning with two perpendicular main blocks and for the lean-to sections supported on arcades, a most unusual feature. The structure is an important representation of a technology and a local industry now lost. The mill is a local landmark, has historical associations and is a rare surviving example of an architect designed vernacular structure.
The Mill is in good condition and is reasonably intact.
Classified: 04/08/1960
