Statement of Significance
Williamstown Botanic Gardens, reserved in 1856, laid out by 1860, and largely rejuvenated c.1900-20, is significant:
- as one of the earliest botanic gardens in Victoria;
- for the sophistication shown by local designer William Bull in its layout; - for the retention of a substantial portion of its original layout and several early tree plantings, especially the pinetum;
- for the survival of significant vegetation, landscape elements and structures from the period c.1900-20, largely reflecting the influence of curator Thake;
- for its collection of plants, characteristic of Victorian and Edwardian gardens as well as representative of more specialised plant groups befitting the scientific role of a botanic garden;
- for the manner in which the division of the garden reflects the local environment: the northern pleasure ground complements the surrounding residential development and the southern pinetum provides a barrier from the windswept coastline.
Classified: 26/09/1990
