ADA NO.2 MILL - History
Heritage Inventory History of Site: The Ada River link to the Powelltown tramway was established in the 1920s and opened up some of the finest mountain ash stands in the area. The Ada No. 2 mill was fundamental to the success of the Victorian Hardwood Company in the 1920s.Construction of the mill commenced in 1920, but it was not completed until 1927 when the rail link was also completed, and did not begin operations until August 1928. The mill was closed in 1930 -31, due to the effects of economic depression and was totally destroyed by fire in 1939.Heritage Inventory Description
ADA NO.2 MILL - Heritage Inventory Description
Extensive remains of mill site including a particularly large boiler in situ and levelled areas for tramways and log yards. Many artefacts present on the site surface including cables, bogies, pulleys, pipe, rails, sawblades etc. The boiler is bricked in and has a brick firebox. 'Hoffman" bricks are main type used. The tramways are presently used as walking tracks. The mill operated 1927-39 and is 100mx80m.
Heritage Inventory Significance: State. The mill dates from the time of the industry's greatest prosperity, and was associated with the notable High Lead inclines which link the Ada Valley to Powelltown. The boiler is an outstanding example of its type.
