Memorial Window Description & History
Stained Glass Window at Camberwell St. Mark's Anglican Church - Memorial Window Description & History
The two-light window by Bruce Hutton of Almond Glassworks, Melbourne was designed as a memorial to the 2/24 Battalion, and commissioned by the battalion's surviving members. Hutton was impressed by the cover image on George Christensen's battalion history, That's the way it was: the history of the 24th Australian Infantry Battalion (A.I.F) 1939-1945, (1982) which he took as starting point for further research. 'Rain, terrain and rivers' emerged as dominant themes for his striking design. The window evokes the difficulties of the battleground, and pictures a landscape with soldiers on the ridge in the foreground en route to the battle that stretches out before them across the valleys and distant mountain ranges.
The window was unveiled by the Association's President, Peter Plumridge and dedicated by the Rev. Richard Trist on 23 April 2006. The window complements the 2/24 Battalion Honour Roll, which is also in the church andlists more than 90 men killed during the campaigns against the Japanese in Papua New Guinea and Bougainville.
