Memorial Window Description & History
Stained Glass Window at Camberwell St. Mark's Anglican Church - Memorial Window Description & History
St. Mark's Church designated the south aisle of the nave as a warriors' chapel, commemorative of war. Each of the two-light windows in the nave depicts a saint from the Bible with a modern martyr. This window wasdesigned by Joseph Stansfield. Standing at the west end of the aisle, it was dedicated by the former Primate of Australia, Archbishop Sir Philip Strong, on 13 February 1972.
A representative of the New Guinea martyrs, Anglican priest, Father Vivian Redlich was the subject of the window, depicted with a nurse at either side. During the Second World War this group of priests and nurses stood by their native flock at Gona, rather than take the opportunity to return to safer soil in Australia. Although the unusual backdrop shows the martyrs being taken by Japanese soldiers it has emerged since that Vivian Redlich was probably betrayed and killed by members of the Orokaiva tribe with whom he and the thirteen others in the missionary group had taken shelter.
