Statement of Significance
What is significant?
The Rosedale Farm site, also known as Rosehill or Lincoln's Farm, is of historical cultural heritage significance as an early nineteenth century farm and mid nineteenth century dairy farm complex and cheese manufacturing facility. The remnant stone walls of the former Dairy and archaeological deposits are all that remain of what was once a farm homestead complex of five buildings including a house with kitchen and underground cistern, dairy, stables and other outbuildings.
How is it significant?
Rosedale is of historical (Criterion A), archaeological significance (Criterion C) and associative significance (Criterion H) to the City of Greater Geelong.
Why is it significant?
Rosedale is of historical significance as the site of the Collins Dairy farm operated by Edwin Collins over 15 years from 1862 and famous for making an award-winning butter and a cheddar like cheese that won multiple colonial awards, and as an early Bellarine farm and residence established by Joseph Birkett in 1849. The ruins of the stone Dairy and archaeological features have the ability to demonstrate aspects of nineteenth century cheese making process and the composition of dairy farms in the region along with more general aspects of rural life on the Bellarine Peninsula.(criterion A)
The site is associated with two prominent Portarlington figures: cheesemaker Edwin Collins, and early businessman J Birkett. (Criterion H)
The site has the potential to yield archaeological information relating to the initial occupation phase by Birkett and information about the colonial cheese making process. Archaeological material relating to both [and later] phases of occupation is likely to be present, and it is possible that the demolition/ remodeling of the existing ruins will expose further archaeological features and deposits related to the historical occupation. The age of the earliest occupation, and absence of broad-scale modern construction having taking place on the property allows for the likelihood of features such as a water cistern, wash closets/ cesspits and former industrial structures to be present on the property. (Criterion C)
