Statement of Significance
REVISED STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE, CONTEXT, 2010
What is significant?
The weatherboard house, in particular the fabric dating to c1913, its underground tank and contemporaneous outbuildings and the surrounding site to a radius of 30 metres (The house is connected to HO29).
How is it significant?
The c1913 weatherboard house is historically significant to the Shire of Nillumbik.
Why is it significant?
The c1913 weatherboard house is socially significant for its long association with the Apted family who have operated their orchard in Arthurs Creek for over a century. The orchard was, in c1916, the largest in southern Victoria and is a reminder of the importance of orcharding in the former Shire of Eltham (Criteria H & A).
BUTLER STUDY, 2001
Proposed revised Statement of Significance for the George Apted house
The George Apted house, underground tank and outbuildings are historically significant to the Shire of Nillumbik: '
. For their long association with the Apted family who have operated their important orchard at Arthurs Creek for over a century; ,
. For their long association with orcharding which was a major industry in this part of the former Eltham Shire in the last decades of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century but is now rare.
ELTHAM STUDY CULTURAL SIGNIFICANCE
The Apted family have operated their orchard at Arthurs Creek for over a century and both of these houses were built for and remain occupied by members of the family. Orcharding was an important local industry in this part of the Shire of Eltham in the last decades of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century. The post Second World War period has seen the predominant land use change to rural residential and commercial orchards in the Municipality have very largely disappeared, giving the Apted orchard added cultural significance. The older house was the principal family dwelling for much of this century. The forge is a very rare survivor in the Municipality. The 1920s/1930s house is also a rare example in the Municipality.

Inspection 2000
(with Eric and Bronwyn South (nee Apted - great grand daughter of George Apted))
The above data' was confirmed, including the revised date and added historical background, except for the forge that has been removed from its simple open shed enclosure (rebuilt c1997), and donated to the Whittlesea historical society. The shed is of no obvious significance given its relatively simple and recent construction. The house is externally well preserved and two gabled outbuildings appear to be contemporary.
Further history is available if the Shire wishes to approach the family: Mrs South's father (Leslie Apted) is a potential source. Payne in The Plenty (6,39, 192) cites the Glen Ard Cool Stores owned by the family as on the old Glen Ard station homestead block. This orchard was noted as the 'largest in Southern Victoria' and George J Apted as a nominee for the first Greater Shire of Whittlesea Council in 1916. George James Apted died in 1938 aged 74. His son, George Herbert Apted, died in 1977 aged 87, his mother being Isabella (nee Herbert) { Death Index 1921 ... 1985}. The comments offered by the owners included the safety of the underground tank: this appeared to be quite secure at the time of inspection and the heritage planning scheme overlay would not alter this. Changed circumstances can be the subject of a permit application.
The Californian Bungalow further south cited above was built for Bronwyn South's great uncle in the 1930s. It is owned by Leslie Apted & SOr)s P/L of 856 Cottles Bridge Strathewen Road, Strathewen (97148238) who should be notified of the amendment This building is a well preserved example of its type and era.
