Statement of Significance
Destroyed in 2009 bushfires
REVISED STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE, CONTEXT, 2010
What is significant?
The entire late 19th or early 20th-century drop-slab farm outbuilding with its lean-to, and the associated site to a radius of 30 metres
How is it significant?
The drop slab barn is historically and technically significant to the Shire of Nillumbik.
Why is it significant?
The drop-slab barn is historically significant as a rare surviving example of a timber slab farm building in a Melbourne metropolitan context; it is one of just four examples in the Shire of Nillumbik (see also HO 63 and HO107) and as a reminder of the importance of farming to the area's past (Criteria A & B). The barn is historically and technically significant because it is an excellent demonstration of the kinds of building that would have been erected by the Shire's early settlers (Criteria A & D).
BICK STUDY, 1992
A rare surviving example of a timber slab farm building in a Melbourne-wide context, this structure is one of just four examples in the Shire of Eltham. This type of vernacular construction was found throughout Victoria during the 19th century, as well as into the 20th century. However, the number of examples surviving in the State is now relatively small. This building is also particularly illustrative of the principal land use during the first one hundred years of the Shire's history, farming.

DEGREE OF SIGNIFICANCE: LOCAL SIGNIFICANCE
EXTENT OF SIGNIFICANCE:
ENTIRE SLAB BUILDING AND SITE TO A RADIUS OF 30 METRES.
