Statement of Significance
St Patrick's Catholic Church, designed by Charles Hanson and built in 1856 - 1860 (nave) and 1871 (chancel), is one of Victoria's oldest substantial churches. The design arrangement, comprising unbroken roofed main body without clerestory and sides aisles is quite rare in Victoria. . It is an example of Catholic churches built in the gothic style during the 1850s reflecting contemporary design practice in England. The scale and design of the church also reflects the importance place upon religious life amongst the widely dispersed communities of the Victorian goldfields since St Patrick's served the immense direct of the Kilmore parish bounded by Castlemaine, Woods Point and Echuca.
The particularly fine main altar of Caen stone was made by Farmer and company of Westminster, London, to the designs of William Wardell, and erected in 1873. The bell, tower and iron palisade fence contribute to the grandeur of the church's design and setting.
