Memorial Window Description & History
Stained Glass Window at Crib Point HMAS Cerberus Flinders Naval Depot Anglican Chapel - Memorial Window Description & History
The central light of this three-light window was designed as a celebration of the Scrap Iron Flotilla, as noted on the window: 'Sneered at by the German Propaganda Minister Goebbels in 1939 as a 'consignment of junk, Australia's scrap iron flotilla', these old First World-War destroyers thereafter proudly accepted and adopted the title.'
The insignia of each of the 'gallant old destroyers' was placed at the top of the window, with the Flotilla Leader, HMAS Stuart above the other four, HMAS Vampire, Vendetta, Voyager and Waterhen, and loss noted. An image of HMAS Stuart in camouflage profile, and another representing her companions were placed below the impressive list of Battle Honours: Mediterranean 1940-41; Calabria 1940; Libya 1940-41; Matapan 1941; Greece 1941; Crete 1941; New Guinea 1942-44; Pacific 1942-45.
